a dapp uses smart contracts to run. A smart contract can be used to create a simple token with no real purpose or ecosystem or be used as the backend for a larger project like Delegatecall. Dapp is an abbreviation of decentralized application.

Just think how a traditional app is comprised of a front-end and a backend (database).
Similarly, a DApp is comprised of a front-end and a smart-contract.

Just take the example of Facebook. Now Facebook can be compared to a DAPP and the underlying AI of Facebook which does all sorting of news, interest based ads can be compared to the smart contracts.
Now take example of this site you are using. Delegatecall is a DAPP and all the underlying coding which is placed on blockchain is the smart contract.
This is essentially the basic difference between a Dapp and smart contract.
