As far as I know, the issuance model is not yet fixed and the members of the Ethereum foundation are still discussing it. One of the merits Ethereum's model has is that it avoids the concentration of wealth in the hands of the early adopters. To put it in other words, everybody has a fair chance.

Once Ethereum will switch to PoS, the issuance will be reduced to somewhere between zero and 0.05X per year. Check out the whitepaper: https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/White-Paper.

There is a difference between Bitcoin and Ether. Bitcoin is used as a cryptocurrency, but Ether is also used as gas. If the gas becomes too expensive, it will become unfeasible to run smart contracts. This is why an uncapped total supply works best for Ethereum.
