It was founded 3 years before Gitlab, meaning it had a chance to become more entrenched and adopted before Gitlab came out. There's not that much that sets Gitlab apart from Github at this point, so I think that unless there is a huge change, Github will stay dominant because of how many people already use it.

GitLab provides an end-to-end DevOps platform while GitHub focuses only the core functionalities expected from a code repository management platform. I think many developers prefer to choose their own tools instead of using the ones shipped with GitLab.

GitHub has the first mover's advantage. As a result, even if it is more expensive than GitLab, it benefits from network effects.
Also, community support makes GitHub a better choice for open-source products.

Both platforms provide almost the same set of code repository management services. The only thing that separates them is DevOps support. If you are into DevOps- go with GitHub. If not, choose GitLab.
